The recent shooting spree in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, has raised significant concern, particularly in the vicinity of Ifite, which is heavily populated by students from Nnamdi Azikiwe University. Reports indicate that the incident occurred around 9:00 AM today, with multiple fatalities linked to the violence. Eyewitnesses suggest that the shooting may be connected to cult-related activities, a recurring issue in the region.
This latest event follows closely after a similar tragic incident in nearby Nibo, where at least 12 people were killed in a suspected cult-related shooting. In today’s shooting, reports suggest that gunmen shot a man in Ifite, near the back gate of the university, with several other bodies discovered by locals, including a university lecturer who counted seven victims before abandoning her commute.
While the exact number of casualties remains unclear, Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer for Anambra State, has stated that the police are on the scene, and further details will be provided. Ikenga also revealed that the police have been investigating intercepted social media content, including videos and voice notes that appear to threaten violence in the state, as part of their broader efforts to maintain peace and security. Security forces have intensified patrols and surveillance in the area in response to these threats.
