The recent arrest of Franklin Okechukwu Nwadialo, chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area in Anambra State, by the FBI in Texas on charges related to a $3.3 million romance scam, has created widespread shock in Nigeria. Nwadialo, accused by the U.S. Department of Justice of orchestrating an elaborate online scam that targeted women on dating platforms like Match, Zoosk, and Christian Café, allegedly used fake identities and fabricated crises to solicit substantial financial aid from his victims.

Anambra State’s Commissioner for Local Government, Tonycollins Nwabunwanne, acknowledged that the state government first became aware of Nwadialo’s arrest online. The government is conducting its own investigation, focusing on upholding justice and preserving the state’s reputation. In a recent statement, Nwabunwanne assured the public of the state’s dedication to integrity and accountability in governance, regardless of any political connections.

While legal actions are underway, constitutional protocols allow Nwadialo’s deputy to take over the chairman’s responsibilities in Ogbaru Local Government temporarily. A senior official from the State Assembly, speaking anonymously, has confirmed this planned leadership transition. Anambra State has also expressed its willingness to cooperate with U.S. authorities to support the legal process, ensuring transparency and justice in light of this high-profile case.
