Popular Nollywood actress, Eniola Ajao has revealed the effect fake news once had on her.
Ajao stated that she almost poisoned herself in response to a hurtful rumour.
In an emotional recount on the show Nollywood on Radio, Ajao revealed that the spread of hurtful, untrue information online drove her to an extremely low point, leading her to consider self-harm. She confessed that the ordeal left her unable to eat for seven days and impacted her ability to focus on her work, including an upcoming film project she had been planning at the time.
Ajao explained that it was the first time in her life she had experienced something so painful.
She said, “I almost poisoned myself because there was news about me online that was far from true.
“It was the first time in my life that I faced something so painful. I didn’t eat for seven straight days. People around me can testify – I didn’t go anywhere.”
At the time, Ajao was in the midst of planning her next film, a process that became increasingly difficult due to her emotional state.
The actress said her son tried to handle the situation by reaching out to everyone and telling them that she was struggling with the lie.
Ajao explained how the fake news affected her deeply, marking the experience as one of the most painful moments in her life. During this challenging time, her family, particularly her son and sisters, offered her vital support. Her son reached out to people to explain her struggles, while her sisters encouraged her to persevere, urging her not to let the malicious rumor consume her.
The actress added, “I don’t even want to remember those things, honestly”, she recounted on the show.
This revelation sheds light on the serious emotional toll that false information can have on public figures and highlights the importance of supporting mental well-being in the face of online scrutiny.
