The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued an alert regarding the illegal sale and distribution of an unregistered condom brand called Foula Condoms. This warning follows the discovery of the condoms in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, and Zango, Katsina State, during a risk-based post-marketing surveillance study focusing on registered condom products in Nigeria.
NAFDAC clarified that Foula Condoms have not been registered for use in Nigeria and highlighted that the product’s labeling is not in English. The agency emphasized the importance of using registered condoms, which are a proven method for preventing unintended pregnancies and protecting against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). They cautioned that unregistered condoms pose risks to safety, quality, and efficacy, potentially leading to leakage or breakage, which undermines their protective effectiveness.
In response, NAFDAC has instructed its zonal directors and state coordinators to conduct surveillance and remove these unregistered products from circulation. They advised all stakeholders, including importers, distributors, retailers, and healthcare professionals, to exercise caution in the supply chain and ensure that all medical products come from authorized and licensed suppliers.
Consumers and healthcare professionals are urged to report any suspicions of substandard or falsified products to NAFDAC through their offices, hotline, or email. The agency also encourages reporting any adverse effects or side effects related to medical products via their E-reporting platforms or the Med-safety application available on both Android and iOS.
