Dr. David Oyedepo, the Chancellor of Covenant University in Ota, Ogun State, has highlighted the importance of equipping Nigerian students with the leadership skills needed to address the country’s challenges. Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria, Oyedepo advocated for the establishment of African leadership development centers across universities to foster these capabilities.
Covenant University has already pioneered this approach, offering online diploma and certificate courses in leadership to address character and leadership issues. Oyedepo noted that the university’s efforts have been reflected in Covenant University graduates being ranked as the most employable among Nigerian universities. The leadership courses aim to instill the competencies necessary for tackling complex national problems, thereby positively influencing youth behavior and character development.
“Covenant is solving character problems among the young people in unmistakable terms.
“Also, the university was succeeding in positively remodelling the behaviour pattern of youths through the leadership development centre,” he said.
He encouraged other Nigerian universities to adopt similar leadership centers to create a network of institutions that nurture effective leadership skills and contribute solutions to the country’s leadership challenges.
