The detention and arraignment of the 76 protesters from the #EndBadGovernance movement highlights ongoing tensions surrounding economic hardship and political unrest in Nigeria. This group, detained in August, includes both adults and minors who were participating in protests across several states, including Abuja, Kaduna, Gombe, Jos, Katsina, and Kano. These protests were largely fueled by the economic challenges affecting Nigerians, prompting widespread public outcry.
In court, some detained minors appeared to be in notably poor health, with a few unable to stand due to malnutrition and illness. These individuals were reportedly rushed out of the courtroom, underscoring concerns about the conditions of their detention.
Looking very sickly, they wriggled in pain in a screeching sound.
The #EndBadGovernance protesters were arrested and detained during the nationwide August 1 to 10 protests which were sparked by widespread economic hardship that led many Nigerians to take to the streets to express their grievances.
The 76 #EndBadGovernance protesters, who were arrested in Abuja, Kaduna, Gombe, Jos, Katsina, and Kano states, are being accused of treason, among other offences.
The #EndBadGovernance protesters include Nura Ibrahim, 24; Abdulbasi Abdusalami, 34; Ahmed Yusuf, 25; Awolu Abdulahi, 21; Umar Musa, 15; Muhammadu Mustapha, 16; among others.
The charges against these protesters, including accusations of treason, carry severe implications, particularly as many of them were peacefully demonstrating against governmental policies impacting their livelihoods.
