The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration, supported by a joint security task force, recently detained 34 individuals—15 beggars and 19 scavengers—across Abuja. This comes after FCT Minister Nyesom Wike issued a directive to tackle street begging and scavenging. Those detained will either receive vocational training at a rehabilitation center or, if unwilling, be returned to their home states.
The operation was conducted by personnel from the Police, Military, DSS, NSCDC, and other paramilitary forces. Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, described the operation as critical to national interest and emphasized a professional yet firm approach.
According to Adamu Gwary, Director of Security in the FCT Administration, the day-and-night operation will cover major routes and districts, including the city center, Airport Road, Kubwa axis, and Asokoro. While no arrests were made in the city center itself, 15 beggars and 19 scavengers were apprehended in other areas. The operation is expected to continue for two weeks, after which an assessment will determine any further action.
