Atiku Abubakar has expressed strong concern over Nigeria’s ongoing energy challenges, particularly the frequent collapse of the national power grid, which has left several northern states without electricity. He has reiterated the urgent need for the federal government and relevant agencies to address these blackouts promptly to restore power in the affected zones, including the Southeast, Northwest, and Northeast regions.
In his statement, Atiku advocated for decentralizing the nation’s power structure, allowing states the autonomy to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity. He argued that energy disruptions in Abuja should not impact the entire country and emphasized his belief in a policy he detailed in My Covenant with Nigerians. His proposal encourages investments in renewable and non-renewable energy sources, such as hydro, solar, and gas, and urges private sector involvement in establishing localized mini-grid systems that could integrate into the national grid over time.
Atiku’s stance underscores a call for more resilient and diversified infrastructure to reduce dependence on a single, often unreliable, national grid and to foster a more reliable and regionally adaptable power supply.
