Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, revealed that President Bola Tinubu is driving an initiative to convert filling stations in Nigeria to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) outlets. During a briefing after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, Ekpo emphasized the numerous benefits of CNG, including its safety, affordability, and environmental benefits. The president has created a Presidential Committee on CNG to spearhead the project, with a goal to ensure that CNG availability reaches all corners of the country.
While Nigeria has an abundant supply of natural gas, Ekpo mentioned that the main challenge lies in the infrastructure needed to deliver CNG to filling stations. President Tinubu has directed efforts to address this by prioritizing the construction of the necessary infrastructure to support the nationwide distribution of CNG.
Ekpo highlighted the economic advantages of using CNG, noting that it is much cheaper than traditional fuel. With fuel prices reaching up to N1000 per litre, CNG offers a significant cost-saving at just N200 per litre.
Addressing concerns over the high cost of converting vehicles to run on CNG, Ekpo explained that the expense is largely due to the imported conversion kits. However, he assured that as more private investors engage in the CNG initiative, the cost of conversions is expected to decrease over time.
