Adrienne Munju, a 41-year-old Canadian woman, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison by a Federal High Court in Lagos for importing 74 parcels of a potent synthetic cannabis strain known as “Canadian Loud” into Nigeria. The cannabis weighed 35.20 kilograms. Munju was arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on October 3, 2024, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos during inbound passenger clearance.

She admitted to being recruited via an online platform to traffic the illicit drugs for a reward of CAD 10,000 upon successful delivery. Munju stated that her financial difficulties, particularly needing to pay for her ongoing Master’s degree in Canada, drove her to accept the offer.

Upon arraignment, Munju pleaded guilty to two charges related to drug trafficking, which violated sections of the NDLEA Act. Judge Dehinde Dipeolu sentenced her to six years for the first count and five years for the second count, with an option to pay a fine of N50 million per count, totaling N100 million, instead of imprisonment.
