This tragic event underscores the dangers of certain traditional practices still being observed in parts of Nigeria. In this case, a misguided fortification ritual led to the unfortunate death of a young man, Chikwado Eze, who had recently secured a visa and was preparing for an overseas journey. His father, Mr. Uwakwe Eze, insisted on a ritual, which involved the services of a native doctor, Enuwa Odugu, who recommended the bizarre and dangerous act of being buried alive for over an hour. Tragically, Chikwado died during the process.
Both the father and the native doctor have been arrested and are being held accountable for their roles in the incident. The native doctor has reportedly confessed, blaming the death on the victim’s failure to follow ritualistic instructions properly. The police are investigating the case and will proceed with legal actions.
This incident highlights the need for greater awareness and education about the risks of harmful traditional practices, particularly when they involve human lives.
