The Abia State Government has announced its plan to begin paying the new ₦70,000 minimum wage to workers starting in October 2024. This was revealed during a press briefing held by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, following the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti. The decision underscores the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of workers in the state.
Kanu emphasized that while the national minimum wage serves as a benchmark, Abia State is prepared to adjust upward if necessary, showing the administration’s flexibility in compensating its workforce. The Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Sunny Onwuma, also confirmed that the state is ready to implement this new wage policy.
In addition to the minimum wage update, the state government has approved nine new road projects across its three senatorial zones. Prince Okey Kanu also highlighted the success of the “Clean Up Abia Initiative,” which has made significant progress in maintaining cleanliness in Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia. The initiative, managed by the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), has deployed over 100 waste receptacles and extended its efforts to abattoirs in Lokpanta, Uzuakoli, and Arochukwu.
Furthermore, the Greater Aba Development Authority and ASEPA have been invited by the United Nations Habitat to a conference in Egypt, where they will share Abia State’s environmental management strategies.
