The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has named social media personality Bobrisky (Okuneye Idris) as a person of interest following an ongoing investigation. On Monday, Bobrisky was intercepted at the Seme border while allegedly attempting to flee the country. This development stems from his controversial sentencing in April 2024 by the Federal High Court in Lagos, where he received a six-month prison sentence for naira abuse.
While he was officially incarcerated at Kirikiri Prison, reports emerged suggesting he spent only three weeks there before being moved to a private location. This sparked public interest, leading to the involvement of prominent human rights lawyer Femi Falana and his son, Falz, who demanded a retraction of statements that suggested Bobrisky’s preferential treatment. Bobrisky denied involvement, shifting blame to another party.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, constituted an investigative panel to look into alleged corruption within the Nigeria Correctional Service regarding Bobrisky’s detention. The panel found that Bobrisky was housed in various custodial centers but did not sleep outside the prison. However, he enjoyed certain privileges, such as a furnished single cell, access to a humidifier, fridge, and television, and frequent visits from family and friends. The panel recommended further investigation into whether these privileges were financially motivated.
In addition to Bobrisky’s case, the panel also uncovered unethical conduct involving a correctional officer, Kelvin Iloafonsi Ikechukwu, who received money into his personal account from Abdulrasheed Maina’s son, an action deemed to violate institutional regulations.
