The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to cease the “weaponisation” of security agencies, particularly the Department of State Services (DSS), and shift focus towards addressing Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions. SERAP criticized the Tinubu administration for allegedly using lawsuits and intimidation tactics against human rights defenders, activists, journalists, and other citizens who exercise their fundamental rights.
In a statement signed by its deputy director, Kolawole Oluwadare, dated October 19, 2024, SERAP urged Tinubu to withdraw a defamation lawsuit filed by DSS proxies against the organization. SERAP contended that security forces are being misused to suppress criticism instead of addressing significant issues like corruption in the oil sector, rising fuel prices, and economic challenges. The organization expressed concern over government attempts to silence civil society voices rather than tackle corruption and reduce governance costs.
SERAP further noted that their office in Abuja was taken over by DSS officials in September 2024, following their public demand for President Tinubu to reverse the petrol price hike. Although the DSS claimed this was part of a routine investigation, SERAP described it as harassment. The organization highlighted the importance of respecting human rights and free expression to maintain democracy and prevent impunity.
SERAP warned that it would be prepared to legally challenge the government if the defamation lawsuit is not withdrawn, stressing the need for transparency and adherence to the rule of law in government actions.
