Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has committed to tackling the ongoing issues in Nigeria’s aviation sector, including frequent flight delays and cancellations. His pledge comes after Nigeria’s removal from the Aviation Working Group’s (AWG) watchlist, which marks a significant improvement in the nation’s aviation safety and regulatory compliance.
Nigeria’s compliance score under the Cape Town Convention rose from 70.5% to 75.5%, an improvement that played a crucial role in its removal from the AWG watchlist. This watchlist is an essential tool for monitoring aviation safety and regulatory standards globally. Being taken off the list signals that Nigeria has met international expectations, reinforcing trust in the country’s aviation oversight.
Keyamo emphasized that this achievement marks a critical milestone for the sector, expressing optimism about the potential for “unprecedented growth.” However, he also acknowledged ongoing challenges such as flight cancellations and inefficiencies in servicing domestic and international routes. Despite these hurdles, he remains confident that with sustained efforts, the aviation sector will reach new heights of success.
