Thomas Tuchel has been officially named as the new England men’s national football team manager, becoming only the third foreign coach in the team’s history. His contract will last until the end of the 2026 World Cup, and he will begin his role on January 1, 2025. Tuchel brings with him extensive experience, having managed top clubs like Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich, and his appointment comes after an exhaustive recruitment process by the FA.
Tuchel will be supported by Anthony Barry, who worked with him at Chelsea and followed him to Bayern Munich. Barry, a rising English coaching talent, has also gained experience with Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal’s national teams. Together, they aim to prepare England for success, with a particular focus on the 2026 World Cup.
This appointment follows Gareth Southgate’s resignation after eight years in charge. Lee Carsley, who served as interim manager after Southgate’s departure, will return to his role as England U21s coach following the senior team’s Nations League matches in November.
Tuchel expressed his pride and excitement in leading the England team, citing a “personal connection” to the country and its football. FA CEO Mark Bullingham and technical director John McDermott led the search process and praised Tuchel’s expertise, drive, and leadership.
