Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has expressed frustration over Nigeria’s frequent power grid collapses, calling it a “national shame.” In a post made on X (formerly Twitter) on October 15, 2024, Obi criticized the nation’s leadership for failing to address the recurring power grid failures, highlighting that the collapse occurred twice within 24 hours.
Obi lamented the prolonged suffering Nigerians endure due to the government’s inability to fix the power sector, emphasizing that stable electricity is crucial for economic growth, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which he referred to as the backbone of job creation and a significant contributor to Nigeria’s GDP.
He pointed out the stark contrast between Nigeria and other leading African economies like South Africa, Egypt, and Algeria, all of which generate and distribute far more electricity despite having smaller populations. Obi linked Nigeria’s power sector struggles to a failure in leadership and policy implementation, stating that the country’s inability to provide sufficient electricity is symptomatic of governance deficiencies holding back national progress.
Obi’s call to action stressed the need for urgent reforms to overhaul the power sector, asserting that Nigerians deserve a government focused on addressing developmental challenges and improving the quality of life.
