The Federal Government of Nigeria has responded to concerns surrounding Sunday Igboho’s recent petition to the UK Prime Minister, submitted at 10 Downing Street. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its spokesperson Amb. Eche Abu-Obe, clarified that they held discussions with the British High Commissioner in Abuja to address the issue.
The High Commissioner acknowledged that the petition had raised alarm but emphasized that press reports on the matter were misleading. He explained that while the delivery of the petition to No. 10 Downing Street was confirmed, it was done in accordance with established protocols for submitting such documents. However, the UK government and the UK Parliamentary Petitions Committee did not endorse or support the petition.
The High Commissioner further reiterated the UK’s non-interference policy in the internal affairs of sovereign nations, noting that similar petitions had been rejected in the past by both the UK Parliamentary Petitions Committee and the government.
Sunday Igboho, a well-known advocate for the Yoruba Nation, submitted the petition on October 12, urging UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to consider the Yoruba Nation’s self-determination bid. Despite the submission, the UK government has maintained its stance of non-involvement in this matter.
