President Bola Tinubu has expressed concern over the escalating violence in Rivers State following the controversial local government elections. This situation has resulted in the burning of three local government secretariats in Eleme, Ikwerre, and Emouha by suspected thugs. The president, through a statement by Bayo Onanuga, called for caution among political stakeholders and urged them to de-escalate tensions, discouraging further violence and vandalism of public facilities.
Tinubu, who is currently out of the country, has instructed law enforcement agencies to restore peace and order in the state and safeguard government institutions from further damage. He also emphasized the importance of resolving political disputes through the judiciary, reaffirming that self-help has no place in a democratic system, especially in Nigeria’s ongoing 25 years of democratic governance.
The tensions in Rivers State seem linked to the feud between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, following the local elections, which were largely won by the Action Peoples Party (APP).
