Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has expressed concerns over recent violent attacks on local government secretariats following the swearing-in of newly elected chairmen, which have resulted in clashes in several areas, including Eleme, Ikwerre, Emohua, and Ahoada East. The violence has included arson and gunfire, with tensions reportedly linked to conflicts between newly installed officials and opposition groups.

Fubara voiced his unease about President Bola Tinubu’s statement addressing the crisis, particularly because his name was specifically mentioned. While he welcomed the President’s intervention, Fubara highlighted that the recent withdrawal of police security from all 23 local government secretariats likely contributed to the vulnerability of the facilities, leaving them exposed to attacks by hoodlums.

The governor is now calling for a reassessment of security measures for local government officials, emphasizing the need for enhanced security arrangements to protect officials and ensure the smooth operation of their duties. He expressed hope that the Inspector General’s intervention would help restore stability.
