The Kogi State Government, led by Governor Usman Ododo, has approved a new minimum wage of ₦72,500 for civil servants, including local government workers. This decision was made following the submission of a report from the State Minimum Wage Committee, which had been in deliberation since September 2024. Governor Ododo also announced a tax relief for all civil servants, which will be in effect for one year, as part of his administration’s commitment to improving worker welfare.
The wage increase and tax relief were among the governor’s campaign promises, and he emphasized the need for civil servants to remain dedicated to the state’s transformation goals. The Head of Service, Mr. Elijah Abenemi, acknowledged the difficulty of determining the new wage but expressed satisfaction with the final decision. Labour leaders, including Nigeria Labour Congress Chairman Comrade Gabriel Amari, praised the governor’s efforts while urging the government to address other unresolved issues such as promotion arrears and leave bonuses.
This move is seen as a positive step towards improving the livelihoods of state workers and enhancing the overall development of Kogi State.
