The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed an ongoing investigation into allegations concerning the accommodation of Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, following his conviction. Bobrisky, a well-known crossdresser, was sentenced to six months in prison for naira mutilation in April 2024. However, allegations recently surfaced that Bobrisky did not serve his sentence in a standard prison cell but instead in a private apartment. These claims have raised concerns about potential misconduct within the correctional system.
Social media influencer and human rights activist, Mr. Vincent Otse, known as Very Dark Man, released an audio recording purportedly featuring Bobrisky saying that he paid N15 million to officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to dismiss charges of money laundering against him and that he spent his time in custody in a private accommodation.
In response, the Federal Government, through the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, inaugurated an independent investigative panel on September 30, 2024, to examine these allegations of corruption and breaches of standard operating procedures within the NCoS. The committee is tasked with investigating whether correctional officers provided Bobrisky with alternative accommodation outside the prison, among other concerns.
Speaking on the matter, the Deputy Controller of Corrections Service, Abubakar Umar, outlined that all inmates undergo a thorough admission process when brought to a custodial facility. This process involves evaluating the inmate’s security risk, needs, and potential issues that could affect their stay or rehabilitation. Bobrisky reportedly identified as male during the process and was assigned a cell based on security assessments to ensure both his safety and that of others.
However, Umar declined to comment further on the specifics of Bobrisky’s incarceration, stating that the investigation is still ongoing. He stressed that the NCoS follows a standard procedure when admitting and housing inmates and that the outcome of the investigative panel would provide further clarity on whether Bobrisky received special treatment outside the custodial center.
Until the investigation concludes, the NCoS is withholding further statements regarding the alleged irregularities in Bobrisky’s imprisonment.
