Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria, has called attention to the importance of the upcoming local government elections in Rivers State, which are set to take place soon. In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), he described the elections as a critical moment for constitutional democracy, particularly in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling affirming local government autonomy.
He referred to these elections as a “beacon of hope” for democracy, emphasizing that they offer an opportunity to reinforce the foundational principles of the republic. Atiku urged supporters of democracy to advocate for free and fair elections, highlighting their potential to revitalize democratic governance at the grassroots level.
He said, “Undoubtedly, this election resounds as a powerful affirmation of constitutionalism and the rule of law, a cause that should rally the support of all true champions of democracy.
This statement emphasizes the importance of upholding democratic values, particularly the right of the people to freely and fairly choose their leaders. Atiku Abubakar, in this context, calls on all individuals who believe in democracy to protect this right. He also commends Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his strong leadership, which ensured that elections were conducted properly, suggesting that Fubara’s role was vital in maintaining the democratic process in the state.
This reflects Atiku’s support for democratic governance and the importance of leaders who uphold these principles.
He also encouraged the residents of Rivers State to embrace their civic responsibilities, urging them to cast their votes with peace and purpose in selecting their grassroots leaders.
The former Vice President reiterated his belief in the sanctity of the democratic process, stressing that the people must be empowered to shape their future.
“It is my unwavering conviction that the democratic process is sacred, and through it, the people must be empowered to shape their future by choosing their leaders in every local community,” Atiku added.
